Reverse description Central field displays the IMP monogram of Emperor Lothair I, a complex interlaced monogram formed from the letters of HLOTHARIVS, enclosed within a plain inner circle in the Carolingian monogrammatic tradition. The monogram is boldly rendered in relief against a flat field. The surrounding circular legend reads IMP HLOTHARIVS, affirming the imperial title of Lothair I, struck in Carolingian majuscule. Some varieties bear pellets or additional marks in the field. The coin's reverse, like the obverse, exhibits the irregular flan and variable strike alignment characteristic of 9th-century hammered papal deniers.
