The surrounding circular legend in uncial Latin reads + SANCTVS PETRVS, invoking Saint Peter as protector of the papal authority. The flan is irregular with visible surface porosity and patination consistent with a billon alloy of low silver content. The overall design follows the established iconographic conventions of Avignon and Comtat Venaissin ecclesiastical coinage of the early fifteenth century. |
