Hermann III served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1089 to 1099, a tenure defined almost entirely by his entanglement in the Investiture Controversy. He initially supported Henry IV, then shifted allegiances — a political oscillation that left the archbishopric financially and institutionally strained.
