Obverse description A plain cross with expanded arms divides the field into four quarters, each containing letters from the abbreviated imperial name FRIDERICUS in Latin. The legend is distributed across the quadrants in a characteristic medieval denier arrangement, reading F / CI / IV / IC. The coin is enclosed within a plain inner circle, with the irregular flan edge typical of hammered medieval silver coinage. The style is archaic and angular, consistent with north Italian imperial deniers of the first half of the thirteenth century.
