Obverse description A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross divides the inner field into four quadrants. Surrounding the beaded circle, the Latin imperial legend reads ✠ CARLVS IMP AVG (Charles, august emperor), rendered in Carolingian majuscules with lunate C and lambda-form A characters typical of the period. The flan is irregularly struck, as is characteristic of ninth- and tenth-century Carolingian hammered coinage.
