Reverse description Central field depicts a plain long cross with expanded terminals, centrally placed within a beaded inner circle that divides the design from the surrounding marginal legend. The cross is rendered in a simple, bold Carolingian style with no additional ornament in the quarters. The outer legend reads VIRDVN CIVITVS, introduced by a cross pattée, identifying the mint city of Verdun and following the standard Carolingian civic mint formula. The lettering is in upright capital characters consistent with the monastic and chancery hands of the period. The flan is irregularly shaped with uneven edges, as is typical of hammered issues from this mint.
