Obverse description A plain cross with splayed arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The legend, rendered in retrograde and partially inverted Carolingian letterforms, encircles the beaded border in the outer field. The strike is characteristically irregular, as typical of ninth-century Carolingian hammered coinage, with the design showing moderate relief throughout.
