Obverse description Plain field bearing a three-line Latin inscription arranged horizontally across the flan, reading CAR / LVS / R, an abbreviation for CARLVS REX (King Charles). The lettering is rendered in bold, slightly irregular Carolingian capitals characteristic of ninth- and tenth-century hammered silver coinage, with no border or inner circle framing the legend. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of hand-struck medieval deniers.
