Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram KRLS (Karolus), composed of interlaced letters forming a cross-like cipher, enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. The surrounding annular border is filled with the circular Latin legend reading clockwise, separated from the monogram by the beaded circle. The flan is irregular in outline, characteristic of hand-struck Carolingian coinage, with the monogram rendered in bold relief typical of the Edict of Pîtres (864) reformed coinage. The overall design reflects the standardised Carolingian temple-and-monogram type introduced under Charles the Bald.
