Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, a complex interlaced cipher composed of the letters of KAROLVS arranged in a cruciform pattern. The monogram is set within a beaded inner circle, with the surrounding annular legend divided by the decorative elements of the design. The entire composition is characteristic of the late 8th- to early 9th-century Carolingian monetary reform coinage, struck in a rough hammered technique resulting in an irregularly shaped flan.
