Reverse description The reverse features a central raised boss or globule set within a circular ring, creating a prominent pellet-in-annulet motif at the center of the field. Four broad arms extend from the central circle in a cross arrangement, dividing the field into four quadrants. The mint abbreviation VRDN (for Verdun) is distributed across the four quadrants, with individual letters placed between the arms of the cross. A small quatrefoil or four-petalled floral ornament appears above the central circle at the top of the field. A cross pattée or similar device is positioned at the top as a punctuation mark, consistent with early Carolingian mint attribution types.
