Obverse description The field displays the royal name CAROLUS arranged in two horizontal lines of capital letters in a bold, archaic Carolingian script. The upper line reads CARO and the lower line LVS, filling the flan without a surrounding border legend. The lettering is broad and deeply incuse in character, typical of the early hammered deniers struck under Charlemagne prior to the monetary reform of 793–794. The planchet is irregular and slightly convex, with the characteristic uneven fabric of pre-reform Carolingian coinage.
