Obverse description The field displays the royal name CAROLVS inscribed in two lines in large, boldly hammered Carolingian majuscule letters: CARO in the upper half and LVS in the lower half. The inscription fills the entire flan, with no effigial portrait, consistent with the pre-reform coinage of Charlemagne's early reign. A beaded border runs along the right periphery of the coin, characteristic of hammered Carolingian deniers of this period. The lettering is deeply struck and irregular in execution, reflecting the hand-crafted nature of the die-work at the Troyes mint.
