| Obverse description | The obverse field bears the royal name CAROLVS arranged in two lines in large, bold capital letters within a beaded border. The monogram-style lettering, characteristic of early Carolingian coinage, fills the flan with the letters C, A, R in the upper register and L, V, S in the lower, reflecting the hammered artisanal style of the period. The script is rendered in a primitive yet deliberate lapidary Latin, typical of the Thérouanne mint's output under Charlemagne. No effigy or figurative design is present, the inscription itself serving as the sole decorative and identifying element. |
