Obverse description Central field bears the Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, formed by the interlaced letters K, A, R, L, V, and S in a bold, angular design typical of late 8th-century Frankish coinage. The monogram is enclosed within an inner beaded circle, with the surrounding field carrying the Latin legend. The die-cutting is characteristic of the reformed coinage introduced under Charlemagne's monetary reorganization of 793–794, with robust, deeply struck letterforms.
