Obverse description The central field displays the Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, composed of interlaced letters forming the name CARLVS, struck in high relief within an inner beaded circle. The monogram is rendered in the characteristic cross-form style associated with the reform coinage of 793–812. Surrounding the beaded circle, a circular Latin legend reads CARLVS REX FR, identifying the issuer as Charles, King of the Franks, introduced by a cross pattée. The lettering is executed in broad, angular capital characters typical of Carolingian hammered silver coinage.
