Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Charlemagne facing right, rendered in a stylized Carolingian manner typical of late imperial portrait coinage. The effigy displays a laurel wreath upon the head and drapery visible at the truncation of the shoulder. The surrounding legend is distributed around the bust in the field, reading KARONS IMP AVG, identifying the emperor by his Latinized name and imperial titles.
