A border of pellets encircles the design, consistent with Carolingian workshop practice. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hand-struck deniers of this era. The overall style reflects the pre-reform coinage of Charlemagne, prior to the introduction of the crowned portrait type after 793. |
