| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field dominated by the retrograde or bold Carolingian monogram of CAROLVS, rendered in the characteristic interlaced letter style of the early Carolingian coinage reform, with the letters C, A, R, O, L, V, and S interwoven into a cross-like device. The monogram occupies nearly the entire flan, executed in high relief typical of hammered silver coinage of the period. A border of pellets encircles the design, consistent with Carolingian workshop practice. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hand-struck deniers of this era. The overall style reflects the pre-reform coinage of Charlemagne, prior to the introduction of the crowned portrait type after 793. |
