Surrounding the inner circle, the circular legend CARLVS REX FR is inscribed in Latin capitals, reading 'Charles, King of the Franks.' The outer border consists of a beaded or dotted rim typical of the period. The overall design is austere and hieratic, consistent with the reformed coinage issued under Charlemagne's monetary reform of 793–794.
