The letters are disposed with 'P' and 'R' in the upper and lower quarters respectively, as is typical of Carolingian mint-mark placement on deniers of this type. The overall design is simple and emblematic, reflecting the standardized ecclesiastical and administrative coinage programme initiated under Charlemagne. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-struck hammered silver coinage of the period. |
