| Obverse description | The obverse displays the royal name CAROLUS arranged in two lines across the field, rendered in bold, slightly irregular capital letters characteristic of early Carolingian hammered coinage. The upper line reads CΛRO and the lower line LVS, together abbreviating the king's Latin name. The letters are large relative to the flan and occupy nearly the entire face, with no portraiture. A beaded border encircles the design, typical of the pre-reform Carolingian denier type struck before the monetary reform of 793–794. |
