| Obverse description | The obverse field displays the royal name CAROLUS inscribed in two lines in large, bold Roman capital letters reading CAR above LVS, executed in the characteristic Carolingian hammered style. The letters are rendered in high relief with strong, angular strokes typical of early Carolingian monetary reform coinage. A beaded border encircles the field, framing the inscription. No effigy or figurative design is present, consistent with the pre-portrait phase of Charlemagne's coinage prior to the Dorestad reform. |
