Obverse description Central plain cross with a small pellet at the center, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding field bears the retrograde or irregular Latin legend reading CARLVS REX FR (Charles, King of the Franks), distributed around the periphery in the characteristic uncial letterforms of the Carolingian hammered coinage. The flan is irregular in shape, as typical of hand-struck issues of this period.

Reverse description Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, intricately composed of the interlaced letters of KAROLVS, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The elaborate monogram, rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style, occupies the central field, while the mint name MASSILIA (Marseille) is distributed in Latin capitals around the outer legend. The overall design reflects the reformed coinage type introduced under Charlemagne's monetary reform of 793–794.
