| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, formed by the interlaced letters C, A, R, L, V, S arranged in cruciform fashion within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is executed in bold relief typical of Carolingian hammered coinage. Surrounding the beaded circle, the Latin legend CARLVS REX FR runs continuously, identifying the ruler as Charles, King of the Franks. The outer border is defined by a beaded rim.
