| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Charlemagne, formed by the interlaced letters C, A, R, L, V, S arranged in cruciform fashion within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is executed in bold relief typical of Carolingian hammered coinage. Surrounding the beaded circle, the Latin legend CARLVS REX FR runs continuously, identifying the ruler as Charles, King of the Franks. The outer border is defined by a beaded rim. The flan is slightly irregular, characteristic of hand-cut planchets of the period. |

| Reverse description | Central field displays a large, prominently struck capital letter P within a beaded inner circle, serving as the mint initial for Mogontia (Mainz). The P is rendered in bold, well-defined relief. The surrounding legend MOGONTIA P encircles the beaded border, identifying the mint city of Mainz. Cross-pattée or star ornaments punctuate the legend in the outer field. The outer edge is defined by a beaded rim, consistent with Carolingian denier coinage of the reform period. |
