Obverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram of Karolus, interlacing the letters K, A, R, O, L, U, and S in an elegant ligature, all enclosed within a plain inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The monogram is executed in high relief with bold, angular strokes characteristic of Carolingian die-cutting. The circular legend, reading CΛRLVS REX FR, runs between the beaded border and the outer rim, identifying the ruler as Charles, King of the Franks. A small cross patée appears at the top of the legend, serving as a punctuation mark. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hammered issues of this period.
