Reverse description Within a central beaded circle, a plain Greek cross with equal arms occupies the field, the quadrants left open. Between the inner beaded circle and the outer beaded border, the circular Latin legend names the Mainz mint. The lettering is bold and characteristic of Carolingian hammered coinage, with individual letters of large module separated by small cross stops in the outer legend. The overall design is simple and hieratic, reflecting the reformed Carolingian monetary standard introduced circa 793.
