Reverse description Central field occupied by the Carolingian royal monogram, a complex interlaced design incorporating the letters of KAROLVS within a stylized, symmetrical cipher enclosed by a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend LAVDVNO, identifying the mint of Laon, is distributed around the outer margin in angular Carolingian capitals interspersed with decorative elements. This reverse type is consistent with Carolingian mint practice of the late 8th and early 9th centuries, identifying both the issuing authority and the place of striking.
