Below the inscription appears a francisca (throwing axe), a device characteristic of certain Dorestad mint issues under Charlemagne serving as a mint or workshop mark. The entire design is contained within a beaded border. The crude, heavily stylized letterforms and uneven relief are consistent with the hammered technique and hand-cut dies of this early Carolingian series. |
