Obverse description Central plain cross within a beaded inner circle, with a small crescent or wedge motif placed in each of the four angles formed by the arms of the cross. The surrounding field carries the circular Latin legend CARLVS REX FR, identifying the issuer as Charles, King of the Franks. The lettering is rendered in bold Carolingian capitals characteristic of the reform coinage period. The overall design is typical of the post-793 monetary reform introduced by Charlemagne, emphasising royal authority through simple, legible imagery.
