| Obverse description | The obverse bears the royal name CAROLVS (Charles) arranged in two lines across the flat field, executed in bold capital letters characteristic of early Carolingian epigraphy. The lettering is divided as CAR o LVS, the inscription filling the flan in the manner typical of pre-reform Carolingian deniers. The coin is struck on an irregular, somewhat flan with uneven edges resulting from the hammered technique. The surface shows the characteristic flatness of early medieval silver coinage with no figural imagery, relying entirely on the monogram-like arrangement of the royal name for identification. |
