| Obverse description | Draped bust of Charlemagne facing right, portrayed in the Roman imperial tradition with a laurel wreath and a fibula-fastened mantle visible at the shoulder. The emperor's features are rendered in a stylized, late antique manner characteristic of Carolingian die engraving. The circular legend KARLVS IMP AVG runs around the periphery of the flan, abbreviating Karolus Imperator Augustus, asserting his imperial title. The portrait closely follows late Roman coin iconography, reflecting Charlemagne's deliberate emulation of Roman imperial imagery following his coronation. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hand-struck Carolingian silver coinage. |
