Obverse description Central field dominated by a plain cross pattée, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The cross divides the inner field into four quadrants. A circular legend in Latin capitals runs between the inner beaded border and the outer rim, reading CARLVS REX FR (Charles, King of the Franks), introduced by a cross pommée. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of Carolingian hammered silver coinage of the reform period.
