| Obverse description | A plain cross occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The Latin legend CARLVS REX F, reading 'Charles, King of the Franks,' runs around the periphery between the beaded circle and the irregular coin edge, introduced by a cross pattee. The lettering is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian uncial style, struck in relief on a flat hammered flan. The overall execution is typical of the reformed Carolingian coinage introduced under the monetary reform of 793–794. |
