| Obverse description | Two-line Latin legend filling the field, reading CARO / LVS (Carolus), the name of Charlemagne rendered in large, bold capital letters characteristic of early Carolingian epigraphy. The letters are crudely but forcefully struck in the hammered style, occupying virtually the entire flan. A partial beaded border is visible along the coin's periphery, framing the inscription. |
