The Bourges mint — ancient Avaricum, capital of Aquitaine — gained renewed importance under Charlemagne's monetary reform of 793-794, when the Synod of Frankfurt effectively standardized the Carolingian denier at a heavier weight cut from a pound of silver. That reform is the reason this coin exists in its current specification: earlier Frankish deniers were lighter, and the transition represents one of the most deliberate currency overhauls in early medieval Europe.
Bourges sat at the administrative heart of a contested region, and its mint output fed commerce across the Loire valley. The Gariel and Prou references cite meaningful die variation across this type — collectors should treat individual specimens as potentially distinct within the broader series.
