Reverse description The reverse displays a central Carolingian monogram of KAROLVS — a cross-based interlaced cipher combining the letters of the king's name — enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend, rendered in bold Latin capitals, names the mint city and is separated from the monogram by the beaded circle. The overall composition is characteristic of the reform deniers struck under Charlemagne following the monetary ordinances of 793–794, with the mint signature serving as an identifier of the issuing workshop at Bourges.
