Barcelona fell to Frankish forces in 801 after a siege lasting several years, and Charlemagne's administration moved quickly to establish imperial monetary infrastructure in the newly secured March. This denier is a product of that consolidation — the Barcelona mint operating under direct Carolingian authority as part of the broader reorganization of coinage following the 794 Frankfurt capitulary, which had standardized the denier across the empire and tied it to a reformed pound weight.

The window of issue closes with Charlemagne's death in 814, but the 801–812 range suggests attribution to the active phase of the Spanish March's integration rather than its later, more settled administration.
