Magnus IV — known as Magnus Eriksson — lost the Swedish throne to his nephew Albrecht of Mecklenburg in late 1363 following decades of baronial opposition, financial mismanagement, and territorial losses to Denmark. This issue falls precisely within that collapse, struck either in the final months of his reign or as part of a transitional emission as control of the kingdom changed hands. Bracteates of this type were already archaic by the mid-fourteenth century, a survival of an older Scandinavian minting tradition persisting in the margins of a crumbling reign.
