Bouchard de Montmorency served as Bishop of Meaux from around 1120 to 1134, issuing coinage under episcopal authority at a moment when the Capetian crown was actively contesting the minting rights of ecclesiastical lords throughout the Île-de-France. Meaux sat at a commercially critical position along the Marne, and its bishops had held minting privileges since the Carolingian period — privileges the local chapter defended tenaciously against royal encroachment throughout the twelfth century.
