Obverse description Central Christogram (Chi-Rho monogram) enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with pellets occupying the four angles formed by the arms of the cross. The device is boldly struck in high relief, characteristic of Carolingian-derived hammered coinage. Surrounding the inner circle, the imperial legend reads clockwise in capital Latin letters, separated by a cross at the beginning. The overall composition reflects the Carolingian monetary tradition adapted to the Italic imperial court of Berengar I.
