Arnulf of Carinthia seized the Carolingian throne in 887 by deposing his own uncle Charles the Fat, who had proven incapable of defending the empire against Viking incursions. The Toul mint, operating under episcopal authority in Lotharingia, continued striking in his name throughout a reign defined by military campaigning — including Arnulf's 894–896 Italian expedition, during which he took Rome by storm and received imperial coronation from Pope Formosus.
Lotharingia itself was a contested rump kingdom, carved from the Carolingian partition, and its mint output reflects the fragmented monetary administration of the period.
