Obverse description Central field occupied by a plain cross with a pellet in each of the four quarters, all contained within a beaded inner circle. The cross divides the field into four equal sections, each adorned with a single pellet, lending a restrained decorative quality characteristic of Carolingian monetary art. A Latin legend in uppercase Carolingian majuscules encircles the beaded border, reading clockwise from the top. The overall composition is consistent with the Pavia mint's hammered denier production of the late ninth century.
