The anonymous deniers of the Würzburg bishopric fall within the turbulent decades of the Investiture Controversy, when the authority to appoint German bishops was violently contested between the papacy and the Salian emperors. Würzburg's bishops were drawn repeatedly into that conflict — Bishop Adalbero was driven from his see in 1090 after backing the wrong faction, replaced by an imperial antipope's candidate. The omission of the bishop's name on these issues may reflect precisely that instability: changing episcopal authority made anonymous coinage the safer administrative choice.
