| Obverse description | Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in the idealised Hellenistic portrait style characteristic of the Lugdunum mint under the early Principate. The emperor's features are finely modelled with short hair swept forward over the brow. The draped bust terminates at the truncation of the shoulder. The Latin legend CAESAR DIVI F — identifying Augustus as son of the deified Julius Caesar — runs around the periphery of the flan. |

This issue belongs to the Spanish mint series — almost certainly Colonia Caesar Augusta (modern Zaragoza) or Emerita Augusta — struck during Augustus's extended stay in the western provinces from 15 to 13 BC, where he was personally overseeing the Cantabrian Wars. The mobile nature of these mints means die links between RIC 88 and neighboring types are occasionally detectable, and the attribution to a specific Spanish city remains debated among specialists.
Augustus returned to Rome in 13 BC, an event celebrated by the Senate's commissioning of the Ara Pacis.
