C. Marius, son of Caius, of the Tromenina tribe, served as one of the tresviri monetales — the board of three junior magistrates responsible for Rome's mint — almost certainly in 13 BC, a year when Augustus was overhauling state finances in the lead-up to his fourth census. The tresviri retained nominal authority over coin design well into the Principate, though by this point their independence was largely ceremonial; Augustus controlled the message.
RIC I 399 is a reasonably well-documented type but not abundant in the market. The moneyer C. Marius is otherwise historically obscure beyond his mint tenure.
