This issue dates to the height of Augustus's Spanish campaigns and was almost certainly struck at the Colonia Patricia (Córdoba) mint to pay legions stationed in Hispania during the Cantabrian Wars — one of the last serious military holdouts against Roman consolidation of the peninsula. Field minting for active campaigns was the operational reality of Augustan coinage, and many Spanish issues from this window circulated almost exclusively within military supply chains before finding their way into broader commerce.
RIC I 82 is among the better-documented of the Spanish series, with die links studied extensively by Sutherland in his revised RIC volume.
