This issue dates to the consulship of Cossus Cornelius Lentulus, who served as ordinary consul in 1 BC — but the coin references him as a moneyer acting under Augustan authority around 12 BC, a period when Augustus was consolidating the coinage system following the death of Lepidus and his absorption of the pontificate maximus. Agrippa had died that same year, making issues pairing Augustus with his recently deceased son-in-law and intended successor politically charged almost immediately after striking.
