| Reverse description | Facing three-quarter portrait — rendered as a left-facing head — of the nymph Arethusa, wearing a wreath of reed, a triple-pendant earring, and a pearl necklace. Four dolphins swim around her head in the field, framing the effigy in the characteristic Syracusan manner. Below the dolphin positioned beneath Arethusa's neck, the engraver's signature ΕΥΑΙΝΕ is incised, attesting to the work of Euainetos. The ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ runs around the periphery of the design. The portrayal exemplifies the refined naturalism and sculptural depth achieved by the great die engravers of late fifth-century Syracuse. |
