| Reverse description | Majestic facing-left portrait head of the nymph Arethusa, rendered in high relief in the masterful style of the engraver Euainetos; she wears a wreath of grain ears in her hair, a triple-pendant earring, and a pearl necklace. The ethnic legend ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ (of the Syracusans) is disposed around the upper field in segments, with the letter Δ positioned below the chin. Four dolphins swim around the periphery of the field, framing the portrait in allusion to the freshwater spring of Arethusa on Ortygia. The engraver's signature EY-AINE is inscribed along the lower edge of the coin. |
